About This Webinar
To be a critical thinker in the 21st century, students must be critical viewers. Research has shown that young children do not naturally develop reading skills by simply exposing them to print texts. The same is true for children learning to read non-print text. Simply showing movies in the classroom does not lead to cinema or visual literacy, or even media literacy. Scaffolding is needed, a variety of strategies and practical applications, that guide students beyond the simplistic read-the-book, watch-the-movie approach to film study.
This 2024 Share My Lesson Virtual Conference workshop presents the scaffold on which The Story of Movies curriculum is based. The Story of Movies’ learning objectives and teaching strategies are rooted in the National Film Study Standards, developed by The Film Foundation working in collaboration with educators and film historians. The focus of this presentation is to review these standards and discuss how to integrate the standards to achieve meaningful film study.
During the presentation, participants will screen and discuss selected scenes from the documentary 4 Little Girls (1997, d. Spike Lee).
