Design-Based Learning: Doing Begins Learning

About This Webinar

Teaching students the skills and mindset needed to become fully engaged in their communities has never been more important. The Doreen Nelson Method of Design-Based Learning© (DBL), a versatile, hands-on methodology with more than 50 years of application in schools around the world, does just that. With tools and techniques for daily practice across grade levels and subject content areas, students learn how to coexist and thrive in an ever-evolving and complex world. This session is a dynamic showcase of how the DBL methodology promotes creative and critical thinking, self-expression, teamwork and decision-making processes to engage students as active participants in their learning and in life.

This 2024 Share My Lesson Virtual Conference session will feature DBL founder, Doreen Gehry Nelson, a distinguished educator, former K-12 classroom teacher and author, who will speak to the relevancy of the methodology in today’s classrooms. Dave Cameron, a high school chemistry teacher and the interim project director of the Design-Based Learning Project at UCLA Center X, will dive into classroom applications to illustrate how teachers can bring required curriculum to life through a student-imagined, student-built tabletop Starter City of the Future.

From designing thought-provoking, collaborative projects to incorporating real-world scenarios that mirror contemporary civic challenges – all in the context of the student-built Starter City of the Future – participants will discover how DBL elevates the learning experience for K-12 students and provides an alternative to formulaic teaching that nurtures active learning and a deep understanding of community connections among students.

Join us as we demonstrate how Design-Based Learning will build a community in your classroom that ignites students’ curiosity and inspires them to become leaders involved in their learning.
