Artificial intelligence has hit the mainstream, and its impact on education is evident. Despite the focus on all the new technologies available to students and teachers alike, AI has also sparked conversations about equity, ethics, and safety. In this presentation, we’ll focus on how human interactions and guidance can make all the difference as we teach our students the skills they’ll need for the future.
Building upon Science Friday’s interviews with artists, technologists, and educators, we’ll ask the big questions. How do we teach students to understand the line between using AI to enhance learning and cheating? How do we ensure equity for marginalized students in a world of potentially biased AI detectors? How do we protect the data privacy and online identities of our learners?
The answers to all these questions rely on one crucial factor: The teacher. A teacher’s knowledge of their students, skill in presenting new ideas, and understanding of the complex issues at hand provide the human touch to transform AI from an educational technology into a valuable learning tool.
Participants of this 2024 Share My Lesson Virtual Conference session will leave with a clear understanding of the challenges and opportunities presented by AI. They’ll also gain tools and media to help students understand their role in the evolution of this technology and advocate for equitable policies in their schools. Plus, the presenter will demonstrate several free activities that introduce important AI concepts to students through project-based learning.
