A VOTE FOR SUSANNA: THE SALTER STAMP PROJECT

About This Lesson

BOOK BLURB: In 1887, the state of Kansas gave women the right to vote in municipal elections. But some men in the city of Argonia, Kansas didn’t think women should have a say in choosing their next mayor, so they put a woman on the ballot―as a joke. That woman was Susanna Salter―and soon the men would find the joke was on them! Narrated by a grandmother who remembered what happened on that election day, this is the true story of a woman who stood up for her right to vote and accomplished so much more.

SIGNED, SEALED, AND (NON-PARTISAN) CAMPAIGNED: The US Postal Service considers suggestions for stamps that reflect the American experience. Mayor's Salter's shocking rise to political fame marked a change in American history. She became the first woman to win/hold this position in both the US and the world. Her election shined a powerful light on the potential for equality.

Susanna's bravery and subsequent victory became a popular topic in newspapers on most continents. Her willingness to take a risk in the face of public humiliation and stay on the ballot as an actual candidate—and the Argonians who supported her reflect the words that conclude America's national anthem..."Home of thy brave!"

Teachers, turn your classrooms into apolitical campaign headquarters! Argonia's election of April 4, 1887 is long over, but your students can still vie for victory.

After discussing A VOTE FOR SUSANNA, have students write their own letters to the US Postal Service Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee.
